2024 KACS 45th
Anniversary GALA
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and supported the KACS 45th Anniversary Gala! Your presence made the day truly unforgettable and added even more meaning to this milestone event. On October 19th, we gathered at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in San Jose under the theme "45 Years of Impact & Building Futures Together," with around 300 attendees, including representatives from local government, the Korean community, faith groups, various non-profit organizations, and dedicated supporters.

KACS hosted a Chuseok event on September 29th at the Bascom Community Center, drawing over 330 attendees. The event featured cultural celebrations, a health fair, and impressive performances by seniors from KACS wellness classes. Local politicians recognized KACS's achievements, while a raffle added excitement. KACS also delivered meals to low-income senior apartments, ensuring inclusivity. The event’s success was made possible by generous support, creating a meaningful experience for the local senior community.

AWC Program Graduation Ceremony
On April 28th, KACS hosted a graduation for the first Elder Wellness Program (EWC) cohort, supported by AACI. Over 22 months, 10 seniors aged 75+ engaged in health education and cognitive activities, forming emotional bonds that eased loneliness and depression. Graduates expressed gratitude, and follow-up support groups will continue their connection.
Community Health Worker Convening
On Saturday, May 18th, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Asian & Pacific Islander Community Health Worker (API CHW) Convening. Throughout the day, we dove into a wealth of knowledge and insights shared by a diverse range of organizations. From the inspiring missions to the impactful programs, each presentation left us feeling enriched and empowered. It was a truly enlightening experience, and we’re grateful for the chance to be part of such an important gathering!

Workshop
On April 20th, Project Citizen hosted a citizenship registration event, offering invaluable support to those seeking to become U.S. citizens. Immigration attorneys were present to provide accurate legal consultations and assist with citizenship document preparation, ensuring participants had the resources they needed to navigate the process with confidence.

KACS 45th Annual
General Meeting
On Saturday, August 26th, KACS held its 45th regular assembly at the Bascom Community Center, presenting program achievements, financial and audit reports, and plans for the next year, concluding with board approval. From July 2022 to August 2023, KACS provided 29,798 hours of elderly welfare programs, including 15,600 nutrition sessions and 7,370 hours of social welfare services. Health Seminar
On April 26th, KACS and the Korean Cancer Support Group hosted a health seminar with Dr. Jonghoon Oh, a nephrologist from Soonchunhyang University. Nearly 50 participants learned about kidney health, its connection to diabetes and blood pressure, and management through diet and health practices. Dr. Oh emphasized the kidneys' critical functions and cautioned against excessive supplement intake. Participants expressed gratitude for the valuable insights, and KACS plans to continue similar health initiatives.
Parent's Day Event
KACS celebrated Korean Parents' Day by visiting 10 low-income apartments, reaching 195 seniors over two days (May 6-7). On May 8, special lunches and red ginseng supplements were provided to 90 seniors participating in our classes and lunch program. We also visited 10 homes of seniors with chronic illnesses, offering support for social services paperwork and delivering meals and gifts.

Under the glow of the full moon, we celebrated community at the First Full Moon Festival! Thank you to all who attended and to the local leaders, including Phuong Nguyen, Tuan Nguyen, Susan Ellenberg, Bien Doan, Lisa M. Gillmor, and more, for their incredible support. We are especially grateful to our volunteers and staff whose hard work made the night unforgettable. Let’s cherish these magical moments and look forward to more events that bring us together.

A Townhall for
Korean American
On August 31st, KACS and the Bay Area K-Coalition hosted "Our Story, Our Voice" at Santa Clara University to promote civic engagement in the Korean American community. The event included a panel discussion with influencers and a screening of Jinyoung Lee's documentary Songs of Love from Hawaii, highlighting storytelling and immigrant experiences.

Resource Fair
On May 24th, KACS hosted a Senior Health and Resource Fair at the Bascom Community Center. Seniors received free basic health checkups and vital health-related information. The event aimed to empower participants to monitor their health and improve their quality of life. It provided resources to support both physical and mental well-being. The fair was a meaningful step in fostering a healthier senior community.

On May 8th, KACS hosted a voter registration seminar with a specialist from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters. The seminar provided information about the voting process and highlighted the importance of voting in shaping our lives. Attendees learned about registration procedures and upcoming elections, with an emphasis on how individual votes drive meaningful change. The event encouraged active participation in elections, empowering community members to make their voices heard. KACS remains dedicated to fostering civic engagement in the Korean American community.

On June 14th, KACS held a seminar with Dr. Ji-Hye Choi on "Understanding and Managing Sarcopenia in Seniors." The seminar highlighted the risks of sarcopenia, including its impact on physical and mental health, and provided self-diagnosis methods, dietary tips, and exercise strategies. Dr. Choi emphasized regular walking and strength training twice a week to maintain senior health and improve quality of life.

On November 14th, KACS held a parent seminar at the Quinlan Center in Cupertino with over 50 attendees. Jamie Yoo highlighted the Anti-Asian Hate Crime project with ALA, emphasizing prevention, support, and civic engagement. Nancy Kim shared insights on 2024 college admissions, focusing on holistic preparation and showcasing students' unique strengths. The seminar provided valuable resources to empower immigrant families and support student success.

KACS hosted a Chuseok (Full Moon ) festival at the Bascom Community Center on Sep 29th. This event combined traditional holiday celebrations with essential services for the local Korean and community residents. The presence of local officials and politicians at the event convey appreciation for the society's efforts and the promotion of K-culture. The event featured diverse artistic performances and an enjoyable raffle drawing for attendees.

KACS hosted the Senior Health & Wellness Fair on May 12th, focusing on promoting the well-being of local seniors. The event featured programs such as a joint pain management seminar conducted by a pain medicine specialist, lung capacity screenings by Breathe California, and a community health worker program for overall senior health management.

Citizenship
Workshop
On October 25th, KACS hosted a Citizenship Workshop at the Bascom Community Center, providing valuable resources for aspiring U.S. citizens. An immigration attorney shared essential information on eligibility, application procedures, and required documents for citizenship. After the presentation, attendees had the chance to address individual questions during a dedicated Q&A session. The workshop aimed to educate and empower participants to navigate the naturalization process with confidence.

Seminar for small business owners
KACS successfully hosted an educational seminar for local small business owners on Tuesday, September 5th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This seminar was dedicated to empowering the rights and legal knowledge of Korean-American small business owners, providing them with diverse information and expert advice to prepare for potential future challenges and to operate successfully in a safe business environment.

Parent's Day Event
On May 8th, in celebration of Korean Parent's Day, KACS provided a special lunch and gifts to seniors who participated in SNP. Additionally, in honor of the occasion, KACS conducted a two-day event called "Visiting Parent’s Day" on May 9th and 10th, visiting low-income senior apartments in our area.

Youth Workshop
On October 18th, KACS hosted a virtual workshop on AAPI hate in collaboration with the Asian Law Alliance. The event focused on strategies to prevent and respond to incidents of hate. Speakers included Mengna Lin, an ALA Community Organizer, and Andrew Kim, a political and commercial entrepreneur. Attendees gained valuable insights into addressing hate crimes and fostering community safety. The workshop highlighted the importance of collective action in combating AAPI hate.

On June 23rd, the KACS held a seminar for Korean caregivers with the aim of enhancing their professional expertise in the field of In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS). The seminar provided explanations on caregiver qualification acquisition, updated methods of timesheet completion, and important precautions to be taken.

Seminar on Elder Abuse Prevention
KACS held a seminar on preventing elderly crime, inviting professional attorneys from SALA. They discussed physical and mental elder abuse, support systems, and recent issues like document forgery and illegal acquisition of personal information.

On February 3rd, at the Bascom Community Center, we celebrated the First Full Moon tradition with cultural performances, delicious food, and fantastic company. Thank you to everyone who made it a special occasion. It was a truly wonderful experience for the seniors in our community.

A health seminar for blood pressure management was held for seniors participating in the senior wellness program. The seminar was conducted by Jessica Moon, a senior manager who is continuously receiving training from professional organizations as a community health worker, and 20 seniors participated.

On Wednesday, April 27th, KACS hosted its grand opening for the Senior Nutrition Program at the Bascom Community Center! Overall, this event was a success as many of our seniors joined us in celebration as we served hot nutritious lunches using our hybrid model of either choosing to take out their lunch or dining in. Thank you to Santa Clara County, City of San Jose, and everyone else who joined!

On August 21st, KACS hosted its 42nd General Meeting! During this meeting, we presented our impact/accomplishments from July 2020 to June 2021, discussed future plans on expanding our programs/services, got approval for the 2021-2022 budget and confirmation for the new Board of Directors from our members, and lastly ended with a Q&A session. A big thank you to our Board of Directors and staff for creating a safe environment for our members to join us in person!

어버이날, also called Parent's Day is a day where we celebrate all parents! Due to COVID-19, we were not allowed to have a proper event for this special day, however we made the best that we could to make sure that our appreciation goes out to our parents and our seniors! With this, KACS staff and volunteers created a drive-thru where seniors can pick up their gifts and lunches! With social distancing protocols, KACS made sure that it was most important for our seniors and families to be safe!

추석(Chuseok), is a Korean holiday in which we celebrate the good harvest. This is actually a major harvest festival that is celebrated on the 15th day for the 8th month of the lunar calendar on the full moon. During this event, we also provide traditional Korean food. Due to COVID-19, this event was not a gathering event. With our drive-thru, we were able to create a successful event with the help of our volunteers from SYC, SCU KSA, and others as well. We hope that we can continue to be more successful for upcoming events. Be safe and Happy Chuseok!

대보름 (Daeboreum), otherwise known as the First Full Moon Festival, is a Korean holiday in which we celebrate the first full moon of the new year of the lunar Korean calendar. We also, provided food from K-Star Doshirak. With the help of Santa Clara University, OakGrove High School, and our KACS volunteers we were able to be successful in this event! Thank you.

Mobile KACS Program
Starting in October 2022, KACS began "a mobile KACS program," in which we visit senior housing regularly to provide social services and health and wellness programs to target home-bound seniors. Through this program, we aim to prevent social isolation, provide social welfare services for at-risk seniors and educate about health promotion in SC County's low-income senior apartments.

KACS organized an event to provide special lunch and dessert to SNP program participants for Thanksgiving. About 120 seniors participated in the event, which served bibimbap and pecan pie, which seniors most prefer among the SNP meal menus, so that they could enjoy the American holiday atmosphere together.

KACS resumed the free lung examination service, which had been provided every year before Covid-19, after two years. Breathe California was an event to check the health of seniors through lung capacity and blood pressure tests.

During this event, we prepared special gifts including a COVID-19 test kit as well as KF-94 masks, as well as providing lunch for 200 of our seniors! We hope to continue these efforts moving forward in 2022. Let's have an amazing rest of the year! Please make sure to stay safe and well!

In sponsorship with the San Jose Public Library (SJAccess), KACS and the SJ Library Team were able to give out many hotspot devices to seniors and families who are residents in San Jose. These hotspot devices enable our seniors and families to use high-speed internet at the comfort of their homes up til 4 months. We would also like to thank the San Jose Public Library for coming and working together with us for this event.

Every year right before Christmas, KACS hosts this event in which we invite our friendly neighbors to bring their families and enjoy the presents and Christmas-themed food such as hot chocolate, DIY sprinkled cookies, and many more! We wish everyone a wonderful holiday as well. Side by side with the Family Resource Center, we were able to make this event a joyous environment!

In celebration of the holiday season, on December 21st and 22nd, KACS held a "Love Sharing" event to provide special lunches and gifts to 150 SNP participants. In addition, our staff members visited over 100 seniors living in eight low-income apartments in Santa Clara County.

KACS provided parent seminars in partnership with the Asian Law Alliance. The seminar provided a variety of information, such as an overall understanding of the American school education system, a healthy and safe school life for children, and the role of parents in forming positive relationships between parents and children.

KACS held the 'Hangawi Festival' at the Bescom Community Center on September 9th, Friday to celebrate Chuseok, the biggest holiday in Korea. This event was the first face-to-face cultural event since the pandemic, and was successfully completed with a total of 265 people attending.

Mother's Day Event

In commemoration of Mother's Day, KACS held a “Visiting Mother's Day” event to visit 110 isolated seniors who live in low-income senior apartments for two days on May 5th (Thursday) and 6th (Friday). This event was able to happen with the support of the Open Stewardship Foundation, the Asian Pacific Fund, and Jeong Kwan Jang. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the organizations and volunteers who supported this event.

추석(Chuseok), is a Korean holiday in which we celebrate the good harvest. On September 17th, KACS hosted its usual drive-thru event for Chuseok.
During this event, we also provide traditional Korean food. Due to COVID-19, this event was not a gathering event. With our drive-thru, we were able to give out special lunches and gifts for our seniors/families. We hope that everyone is still staying safe and healthy.

50 Korean American leaders gathered at this event presented by KACS, KACF-SF, and KABANC to address ongoing AAPI hate crimes and prevention, discussing the urgent issues facing our Korean American community. This event was a great success, and we truly appreciate everyone who attended and voiced their opinion on the biggest challenges they had. With all of the information we have gathered, we hope to continue this amazing effort to share and empower voices within the greater KA community and figure out our action plan.

New Voting Experience &

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters and KACS presents the New Voting Experience for 2020 Election and the 2020 Census as the new way to bring light to our members about what our Korean community can do to help as a civil's duty. During this, we were able to speak about the new VCA (Voter's Choice Act) Policy placed this year for our elections, as well as discuss about why we all count for Census 2020 for April 1st, 2020!

예술제 (Yehsulje), or the Korean Arts Festival, is an event that KACS hosts every year to show off the enchanting beauty of Korean culture. During this event, we showcase our wellbeing classes such as Zumba, 장구 (Korean drums; Jang-gu), Line Dancing, Ukelele, and many more!
